at the head of her hummingbird Epiphone.
A bead of sweat hanging from her nose alone.
Electric tape covering her toes.
What those feet had kicked no one knows.

She just killed the murder ballad
Nailed it and then hung it from a tree
Anyone who walks that path
can hear its bloody melody

Junkies in her songs
playing blackjack through the night
with hockey cards subbing for the lost.
That dirty low-down view was not without a cost.
She fluttered on the high notes in a way
that when scooping out the lows she made you pay

Like falling off a log
the song's protagonist
wound up slitting their sleeping lover's throat
to save them from a fate that wouldn't float.
The living lover sunk into despair.
The no-longer-living lover filled the air
